A Lake Bracciano day trip from Rome costs €17 and needs no booking: €3.60 each way on the FL3 regional train from Roma Ostiense, 1 h 06 to the station below the town, and €10 at the door of the Castello Odescalchi, a fifteenth-century fortress that fills the skyline above the lake. Around the crater rim are two more towns, Anguillara Sabazia on its promontory and Trevignano Romano under the cliff on the north shore, and the water between them is a drinking-water reserve with no motorboats, which makes it the cleanest swim within an hour of Rome.

It is the quietest destination on the departures board. There is no queue, no nominative ticket and no coach park; the price of that is that the tours are small minibus departures and the two towns without a station need a bus or a tour. This page gives you the train day to Bracciano, the three-town day with a guide, and the sums for both, then a section on Nemi, the little lake on the other side of Rome that people bracket with this one.

The FL3 fare is fixed at €3.60 whichever Rome station you board at; from Termini you change once and add 25–40 minutes.

Getting there: the FL3 from Ostiense, or the Cassia

FL3 regional train. The Roma–Viterbo line, branded FL3, runs from Roma Ostiense through Trastevere, San Pietro (a ten-minute walk from the Vatican) and Valle Aurelia (Metro A) to Bracciano and on to Viterbo. On the weekday we checked, departures from Ostiense were at 22 and 52 minutes past the hour through the morning, taking 1 h 06 to 1 h 14, and the half-hourly pattern held through the afternoon; the fare is a fixed €3.60 by distance band, the same from every Rome stop. Returns from Bracciano in the late afternoon were at 17:09, 17:37, 18:09, 19:16 (the fastest, 58 minutes), 20:40 and 21:11, with the last trains around 22:00 and a replacement bus after. From Termini there is no direct train: change at Ostiense or Tiburtina, 1 h 30 to 1 h 45 door to door.

Tickets at the machine, in the Trenitalia app or with a contactless card at the validator; paper tickets must be stamped before boarding, and Ostiense, Trastevere and San Pietro are all stations where boarding without a ticket is treated as fare evasion, €100 plus the fare. Our Trenitalia review has the regional rules; the trains from Rome hub has the strike calendar.

Bracciano station is a ten-minute walk uphill from the castle gate. Anguillara's station, two stops earlier, is inconveniently far from the lakeside town; Trevignano has no railway.

Cotral bus. From Saxa Rubra (on the Roma–Viterbo urban railway from Piazzale Flaminio) Cotral runs to Bracciano for €2.80 according to the fare calculator, and local Cotral routes link Bracciano with Anguillara and Trevignano round the lake. It is slower than the train to get there and the only public way between the towns; check times in the Cotral app, because the round-the-lake buses thin out in the afternoon. See the Cotral review for how the fare bands work.

The tour. The three-town day is a 7 h 30 minibus loop from Rome via the Via Cassia: Bracciano, Anguillara and Trevignano with a guide, €85, castle and lunch extra. It exists because the public transport between the towns is the weak link, not because the drive is long.

The day, hour by hour

  1. Meet in central Rome; the exact point is on your voucher. Minibus out on the Cassia, about an hour.

  2. Bracciano: the castle from outside and the streets below it, then the terrace over the lake. Castle entry is extra if the group goes in.

  3. Anguillara Sabazia: the promontory town, the lakeside promenade, lunch by the water (not included).

  4. Trevignano Romano on the north shore: the church at the top, the long lakeside walk, a swim in summer.

  5. Back over the crater rim; Rome by 16:30–17:00.

Do-it-yourself variant

  1. FL3 from Roma Ostiense (or Trastevere, San Pietro, Valle Aurelia on the way). Validate a paper ticket; €3.60.

  2. Bracciano station. Ten minutes uphill to the castle gate on Via Giulio Volpi; it opens at 10:00.

  3. Castello Odescalchi: two hours for the halls, the armoury and the walk round the walls.

  4. Lunch in town, then down to the lake shore: the path along the water towards the lido.

  5. The Sabazia II cruise round the three towns if it is sailing, or the Cotral bus to Anguillara or Trevignano for the afternoon.

  6. Train from Bracciano; Ostiense at 18:42. Later trains at 18:09, 19:16 (58 min) and 20:40.

What you actually see

Bracciano and the castle (three hours). The Castello Orsini-Odescalchi is a working castle rather than a ruin: a pentagon of towers begun in the fifteenth century, with frescoed halls, an armoury, a library and a wall-walk that gives you the whole lake in one look. The visit is self-guided on weekdays and takes 90 minutes to two hours; on Sundays and public holidays the foundation offers a free guided route eight times a day, which is the best way to see it. The town below the castle is a grid of steep streets with a couple of piazze and views down to the water; the lake shore is a further twenty minutes downhill, with a lido, a path along the reeds and, in season, the Sabazia II ferry, which sells a 90-minute three-town cruise for €9.

Anguillara Sabazia (two hours). A fishing village on a rock that sticks out into the lake, with a promenade, a beach on each side and restaurants that do the lake's whitefish (coregone) and eel. It is the town to have lunch in.

Trevignano Romano (two hours). The prettiest of the three: a long lakeside walk under plane trees, a medieval church on the crag above with a view back across the whole crater, and the widest beaches. It is also the hardest to reach without a car, which is why it is the one you see on a tour and skip on the train.

Nemi and the Roman ships (a different direction). Lake Nemi is 30 km south-east of Rome, in the Castelli Romani, and has nothing to do with Bracciano except that both are crater lakes; you cannot combine them in a day without a car. Nemi is a village of wild-strawberry cafés on a ledge above the lake, reached by Cotral bus from Anagnina via Genzano. On the shore is the Museo delle Navi Romane, built to house Caligula's two colossal pleasure ships raised from the lake between 1929 and 1931 and lost to fire in 1944; it holds models, bronzes and the anchors. The museum was closed for renovation works when we checked and normally costs €3; the Castelli Romani page tracks its status and pairs Nemi with Castel Gandolfo, which is the sensible day.

How the two days compare, hour by hour

Train day (Bracciano only) Three-town tour

Castle 10:00–12:00, €10 at the door Exterior and town; interior extra if the group goes in
Lunch Bracciano or the lake shore, your choice Anguillara, by the water, not included
Afternoon Shore path, lido, €9 cruise if sailing Trevignano: church, promenade, swim
Back in Rome 18:42 (17:37 train) or earlier 16:30–17:00
Cost per person €17 (€26 with the boat) €85 plus castle and lunch
Booking None Yes; small departures

The train day is cheaper by €68 and gives you two hours more in Bracciano; the tour gives you the two towns you cannot reach easily and the transport between them. If it is your first time and you want the whole lake, take the tour; if you want a castle and a swim, take the train.

Tickets, seasons and the water

The castle is the one paid attraction and it is priced like a village museum: €10, cards accepted, no booking, open every day of the year but Christmas Day. Its two timetables follow the clocks, with weekday last entry at 16:00 in winter and 17:00 in summer, and an hour later at weekends. The castle hosts weddings and corporate events, and on those days the hours can change without much notice; if you are coming specifically for the interior on a Saturday, a quick look at odescalchi.it the night before is worth it.

The lake sets the season. From June to September the beaches below Bracciano, at Anguillara and along the Trevignano shore are open, the ferry runs and the lakeside restaurants are full at Sunday lunch; that is when the tours sell and the afternoon trains back are busy. From October to May the towns are quiet, the castle is empty on a weekday morning and the walk round the shore is at its best; the cruise may not be sailing, and the round-the-lake buses are sparser. The lake is about 160 m deep and cold below the surface even in August. Take swimming things from June, a layer in any month, and cash for the small lidos.

Tour prices

The Bracciano group on GetYourGuide has two products: the three-town day at €85 and the Bracciano and Calcata day at €195, which trades Trevignano for the hill village of Calcata and adds a winery lunch. The castle tour with lunch is a private-style day at €220. Prices checked regularly; the table shows the live figures.

Operators who run it

The lake products are local minibus and boat operators selling through GetYourGuide; none of the big Rome coach companies runs a scheduled Bracciano day, which is why the flagship has fifteen reviews and not five thousand. For public transport the operator is Trenitalia, and the FL3 is one of the better regional lines out of Rome: frequent, cheap and rarely full. At the private end, Through Eternity lists a Bracciano, Caprarola and Viterbo private day at €870 for two, and the chauffeur companies in our private day trips guide will build a lake day by the hour; LUXURBE sells the hourly car rather than a packaged lake tour.

Verdict: the train day, unless you want all three towns

Take the FL3 to Bracciano, spend the morning in the castle and the afternoon on the shore, and you have had a €17 lake day that no tour improves on. Book the €85 three-town loop only if Anguillara and Trevignano matter to you and you do not want to work out the Cotral buses, or if it is July and you want to swim at Trevignano without the walk. On the departures board this is the slow, cheap, uncrowded row; for the beach-and-sea version of the same idea look at Sperlonga, and for a shorter lake day with a papal palace, Castel Gandolfo. All of them are on the departures board with the hours and euros side by side.

Questions people ask

How do I get from Rome to Lake Bracciano?

The FL3 regional train from Roma Ostiense, calling at Trastevere, San Pietro and Valle Aurelia, reaches Bracciano in 1 h 06 to 1 h 14 for a fixed €3.60, every 30 minutes in the morning on the weekday we checked. From Termini you change once and it takes 1 h 30 to 1 h 45 for the same fare.

How much is the Bracciano castle?

€10 full price at the door according to odescalchi.it, €9 reduced (university students with ID and residents; over-65s on Tuesdays only), €8 for children aged 6 to 12 and free under 6. On Sundays and holidays a guided route is included at no extra cost, eight times a day.

Is Castello Odescalchi open every day?

Yes, except 25 December. Weekdays 10:00–17:00 in winter and 10:00–18:00 in summer, an hour longer at weekends; last entry an hour before closing. The castle hosts private events, so hours can change on those days.

Can I visit Anguillara and Trevignano by train?

Anguillara has an FL3 station, but it is outside the town, a long walk or a local bus from the lakeside. Trevignano has no station at all: Cotral buses from Bracciano or a tour. That is the case for the €85 three-town day.

Is Lake Bracciano good for swimming?

Yes: it is a drinking-water reserve with no motorboats apart from the ferry, so the water is clean. There are free beaches and paid lidos below Bracciano, at Anguillara and along the Trevignano shore from June to September.

Which is better for a day trip, Bracciano or Nemi?

Bracciano is the bigger day: a train ride, a real castle and three towns round a lake you can swim in. Nemi is a small lake and a village famous for strawberries, best combined with Castel Gandolfo on the Castelli Romani side; its Roman ships museum was closed for works when we checked.

Can I do Bracciano as a half day?

Just about: the 08:22 train, the castle at 10:00, lunch, and the 13:37 or 14:09 train back has you in Rome by 15:30 for about €17. You will not see the other towns, and the lake shore deserves the afternoon.
