Roma catacombs: what half a day actually buys
The Roma catacombs are the one big city sight that behaves like a day trip: they are outside the Aurelian walls, they need a bus or a coach, and each site keeps its own weekly closing day. That makes them a poor fit for a full-day excursion week, and a very good fit for the half-day gap between two: a morning in Ostia Antica and an afternoon underground on the Appian Way is the tidiest pairing on this site.
The economics are simple. Every catacomb on this page charges €10 with a compulsory guided visit of about 40 minutes, according to the official sites, and the bus costs €1.50 each way. The transfer tours at €49–59 add a coach from the centre and, in the best-selling format, the Capuchin crypt on Via Veneto. You pay roughly €35 for not thinking about bus 118. Sometimes that is worth it; the rest of this page tells you when.
Why it pairs with a short trip
The five sites split into two groups: three on or near the Appian Way in the south (St Callixtus, St Sebastian, Domitilla), one in the north (Priscilla, on Via Salaria), and the Capuchin crypt in the centre, which is not a catacomb at all but the bone-decorated chapels of a Capuchin convent. Only the Appian Way group makes sense in the same afternoon, and only if the day is right.
| Site | Closed | Hours | Get there |
|---|---|---|---|
| St Callixtus | Wednesday | 09:00–12:00, 14:00–17:00 | Bus 118 from Colosseo (B) or 218 from San Giovanni (A) |
| St Sebastian | Monday | 09:15–17:15, no lunch break | Bus 118 or 660, stop at the entrance |
| Domitilla | Tuesday | 09:00–12:00, 14:00–17:00 | Via delle Sette Chiese 282, off Via Ardeatina; timed slots online |
| Priscilla | Monday | Tue–Sat 09:30–13:00, 14:00–17:00; Sun from 11:30 | Metro B Bologna, bus 310 |
| Capuchin crypt | Open daily | 09:30–13:30, 14:30–18:30 | Metro A Barberini, a few minutes on foot |
All hours from the official sites in our sources; the annual closures are on those pages too (St Callixtus and Priscilla shut for a few weeks in January–February, Domitilla from Christmas Eve to late January, St Sebastian for three weeks in December).
The pairing logic: Ostia Antica is closed on Mondays, St Callixtus on Wednesdays, so the Ostia-plus-catacombs day is a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Leave the Ostia site by 13:00, take the Metromare back to Porta San Paolo, ride Metro B two stops to Circo Massimo and pick up bus 118 at Terme Caracalla/Porta Capena; you are at the St Callixtus gate for the 15:00 or 15:30 tour with time for St Sebastian afterwards, a short walk down the same road, until its 16:45 last English tour. The Castelli Romani morning works the same way, with the regional train back into Termini and Metro A to San Giovanni for bus 218.
What does not pair: a coach day. Pompeii and Tuscany coaches are back after 19:00, when every catacomb has been shut for two hours. Book the Capuchin crypt for that evening instead; it is open until 18:30 with last entry at 17:30, so even that needs a 19:00 return to be honest with yourself. Better still, keep the evening for a night walk.

What you actually see, and how long
Forty minutes underground is the same everywhere; what changes is what the site's guide shows you. At St Callixtus the route is the Crypt of the Popes, where nine third-century popes were buried, the Crypt of St Cecilia and the painted Cubicles of the Sacraments; it is the largest and busiest of the group, with the most languages on the departure board. St Sebastian, according to its official site, has about 12 km of galleries on three levels down to 18 metres, three second-century mausoleums with original stucco and frescoes, and the Memoria Apostolorum where Peter and Paul were venerated together; the basilica above, with Bernini's last bust, is free. Domitilla's visit ends in a sunken fourth-century basilica; Priscilla's is the quiet one, with the earliest painted Madonna and a booking system that keeps groups small.
The temperature underground is a constant 17–18 °C, which the St Sebastian site mentions as a reason to carry a layer in August. Two sites in one afternoon is realistic on the Appian Way; three is not, because of the lunch closures and the 40-minute departures. Nobody needs all five.
What to book and when
The official ticket does not need booking. At St Callixtus you pay at the door, cash or card, and join the next departure in your language; there is no online sale except through Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi. St Sebastian offers a free online reservation to pay on site, or a €12 pre-paid ticket through the same ORP channel. Domitilla sells timed slots online. Priscilla asks everyone to reserve and charges €2 extra for online payment. In practice, on a weekday afternoon outside Easter and October, you walk up and wait at most 30 minutes.
The transfer tours do. The catacombs and Capuchin crypt tour with transfers at €59 is the flagship of this page, rated 4.7 from more than 7,000 reviews at the time of checking, so book it a few days ahead in season. It runs 2 h 30–3 h 30 and the operator chooses the catacomb, which is the polite way of saying they route around the closing days for you. The €49 versions differ in the small print: one includes the crypt, one offers it as an option, one skips it.
Book the crypt separately if you only want the crypt. The Capuchin museum's own ticket is €10 with audio guide (plus a €1.50 fee online), open every day, and 45 minutes is enough. The transfer tours are for people who want the Appian Way without the bus, not for the skulls.

Tickets for a single catacomb
If you are doing the bus yourself, the resold tickets below cost €14–15 against €10 at the gate. The only reason to buy one is a guaranteed slot in your language on a busy day; otherwise pay on arrival.

The Appian Way by e-bike or golf cart
The other way to spend the half day is above ground. The e-bike tour at €59 covers the Appian Way, the aqueducts park and a catacomb in 4–6 hours, so it is a full half-day-plus and should be the only thing you book that day. The golf-cart formats do the same loop seated in 2 h 30–3 h with a small group; the golf cart tours page has the city versions.

PickAppian Way golf cart with catacombs

Only the skulls
PickVia Veneto, open daily, 45 minutes; fits any evening before a 19:00 food tour.
Who runs the tours
The flagship transfer tour is listed on GetYourGuide by City Wonders Ltd, the Dublin company behind the Dark Rome brand that started with the "Dark Heart of Rome" evening walk; its direct booking terms give a full refund up to 24 hours before. If you want a private guide instead of a coach, Through Eternity prices its private tours for up to two people with entrance fees included, and Enjoy Rome lists a catacombs and Appian Way tour direct at €85. I Love Rome, the Gray Line brand run by Carrani, is the hop-on operator most visitors meet at Termini; its Colosseo stop is currently suspended, so the sightseeing bus is not a shortcut to the 118 either.
The verdict for a day-trip week
Treat the Roma catacombs as the second half of a short day, not as a sight to squeeze in after a coach. Pick a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday, do Ostia Antica or Castel Gandolfo in the morning, and be at the St Callixtus gate for a 15:00 tour with €10 in your pocket. If bus timetables are not how you want to spend a holiday afternoon, the transfer tour below does the same afternoon with the Capuchin crypt added and a coach back to the centre.
