Dark Rome is a name you will still meet in guidebooks, forum threads and third-party booking sites, but it is no longer a company you can book with. Type darkrome.com into a browser and you land on citywonders.com. This page exists so that you can check an old recommendation against what is actually on sale today: the same operator, a different name, and a catalogue that now runs from evening walks to 15-hour coach days. Price level: City Wonders pricing, mid-market.
What Dark Rome was
We used the Wayback Machine because the live domain simply forwards. The earliest archived copies of the site are titled "Dark Rome Tours and Walks of Rome, the Vatican City and Florence", sold as small-group tours. Later copies add Venice, Milan and Sorrento, and the home page describes Dark Rome as "a City Wonders brand". The most recent archived copies carry a City Wonders Limited copyright line, and now the domain redirects outright.
City Wonders' own history page closes the loop: the company began in 2004 with one product, the Dark Heart of Rome evening tour, and grew from there under founder and CEO Simone Gozzi. So Dark Rome was not acquired by a stranger; it was the original brand of the same Dublin-registered company, kept alive as a sub-brand for a while and then folded into the main name.
What the brand sells now, and how you book
Everything is on citywonders.com or on GetYourGuide under "City Wonders Ltd.". For the "day in the city between day trips" this site is built around, three formats matter:
- Catacombs and Capuchin crypt with transfers. The GetYourGuide listing Capuchin Crypts and Catacombs Tour with Transfers names City Wonders as the activity provider. It is the underground format that fits the day in the city: a coach or minibus out along the Appian Way, a guided catacomb visit, and the Capuchin crypt on Via Veneto. About three hours, which pairs with a morning at Ostia Antica or an afternoon train to Tivoli.
- Coach day trips. Pompeii with optional Vesuvius, Pompeii-Amalfi-Sorrento, Tuscany and Amalfi-Positano, all detailed in our City Wonders review.
- City tours. Vatican, Colosseum and evening walks. We do not cover those in depth here; see our Colosseum and night tours pages for how they fit around an excursion.

The practical detail
Stale listings. Because the brand ran for many years, third-party sites still show "Dark Rome" products with prices and meeting points that may be years old. Do not pay on such a site. Search the same product name on GetYourGuide or citywonders.com and compare the price shown there; the live feed on this page is checked regularly.
Meeting points. City Wonders day trips from Rome list Piazza del Popolo as the departure point, with check-in 20 minutes before departure; the catacombs tour's meeting point is shown on the listing. In every case the exact point is on your voucher.
Cancellation. Booked direct: free up to 24 hours before the start, nothing back inside 24 hours. Booked on GetYourGuide: the platform's window applies, shown at checkout.
Customer care. One team for the whole group; the site lists phone lines for Italy, the UK, the US, France, Spain, Australia and the Dublin HQ, plus chat and WhatsApp for confirmed bookings.

Dark Rome vs booking on a platform
There is no longer a "Dark Rome price" to compare. The useful comparison is City Wonders direct against GetYourGuide: on identical products the prices matched when we checked, the platform has the friendlier cancellation window, and direct booking gives you a phone line before you travel. For the catacombs tour, the compare table above shows the same format from several operators at €49–€85; the City Wonders version sits in the middle with by far the most reviews.
Verdict
Treat "Dark Rome" as a historical name. If a friend or a forum recommends a Dark Rome catacombs tour or Pompeii day, the current version is on sale under City Wonders, and the operators hub shows how it compares with Green Line, Carrani and the premium small-group brands. Book through the platform for flexibility; book direct if you need to talk to someone first.
