Carrani Tours is the oldest tour operator in Rome and the company that owns the Gray Line I Love Rome brand, so a lot of what you book as "I Love Rome" or as an unnamed GetYourGuide day trip is a Carrani coach. It suits travellers who want the long-range days a train-and-coach operator can do (Capri, Venice, Amalfi by train and ferry) and anyone who values a company with a hundred years of paperwork behind it. Price level is mid to high: €118.80 for Tivoli, €149 for Capri, €243.95 for Venice on GetYourGuide (prices checked regularly).
What Carrani Tours actually is
Everything below comes from carrani.com and graylinerome.com. Carrani Tours S.r.l. was founded in Rome in 1925 and describes itself as a destination management company: it builds packages, escorted "Fantasia" coach circuits and shore excursions for tour operators and agents worldwide, and it runs Rome sightseeing for the public under a separate brand. The company publishes its registered address (Via Ignazio Pettinengo 72), VAT number and management team, and states that its open-bus service carried 318,000 passengers in its most recent reported year.
The consumer side is Gray Line I Love Rome. Carrani says it was chosen by the Gray Line group as its exclusive operator for Rome in 2014; the pink double-deckers and all the Rome-based tours sit under that brand at graylinerome.com. Carrani has also opened a walk-in store at Via Solferino 15/19 by Termini where the I Love Rome tours are sold over the counter. If you see a legal name on a voucher, it will be Carrani; if you see a bus, it will say I Love Rome.
What it sells from Rome and how you book
carrani.com itself is trade-only: catalogues to download, a B2B login and an agent booking portal at booking.carrani.com. Do not look for a "book now" there. As a traveller you have three routes to the same product:
- graylinerome.com — the full retail catalogue with 33 out-of-Rome listings at the time of checking, priced in euro with free cancellation on most.
- GetYourGuide — the Gray Line I Love Rome supplier page, which had an overall rating of 4.3 from more than 46,000 reviews when we read it.
- Tiqets and Headout — mainly the hop-on bus; see our I Love Rome review.
The out-of-Rome list on graylinerome.com is the widest of any Rome coach operator: Pompeii (with or without guide), Capri with or without the Blue Grotto, Positano and Amalfi by high-speed train and ferry, Florence three ways (guided day, train-only, train plus Uffizi entry), Venice by train, Assisi, a Sorrento shuttle, and multi-day circuits from five to eleven days. The multi-day trips page covers the longer ones.

What it costs
The GetYourGuide prices in our catalogue match the direct prices on graylinerome.com almost to the euro (Venice €243 direct, €243.95 on the platform; Capri €149 on both; Amalfi €261 on both; Florence by train €130 direct, €130.50 on the platform), so the platform's cancellation terms come at no premium.
Capri is where the two Carrani formats sit side by side, and the difference is a guide and the Blue Grotto boat:
Same trip, platforms compared
Prices refreshed from the GetYourGuide, Tiqets and Headout feeds.
| Platform | Price | Rating | Duration | Cancellation | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GetYourGuideFrom Rome: Capri Island Day Trip | €149 Lowest price | ★ 4.5 (369) | 15 h | Free cancellation | Book on GetYourGuide |
| GetYourGuideFrom Rome: Capri Guided Day Trip with Blue Grotto | €219 | ★ 4.3 (262) | 12 h | Free cancellation | Book on GetYourGuide |
For Pompeii, the Carrani product on GetYourGuide is the "tour options and shuttle" listing at €69.30, which is a transfer with optional guiding rather than a full guided day; the Pompeii page compares it with the guided coach days from other operators.
The practical detail
Meeting points. Published as a lettered list on graylinerome.com: the I Love Rome visitors centre at Via Rusticucci 4A near St Peter's Square, Piazza del Risorgimento, the Arch of Constantine, Viale Vaticano 100, Largo Argentina, Piazza della Minerva and more. Staff wear pink-branded shirts. Be there 15 minutes early; the exact point for your tour is on the voucher.
Office. Via Solferino 17, next to Termini, open daily from 06:30 according to the hop-on page (it lists 06:30–18:30, with seasonal variations).
Group size. Full-size coaches on the classic days; the Amalfi and Positano day is sold as small-group and travels by train and ferry, not coach. Private versions of Positano and Amalfi start at €832 on graylinerome.com.
Cancellation. The retail listings show "free cancellation" and the hop-on page says fully refundable up to 24 hours in advance. Attraction tickets inside a tour may be non-refundable once issued; read the listing.
Languages. The about page says its guides speak five languages (English, Spanish, German, French and Portuguese) and the hop-on page lists audio commentary in 12. Day trips are sold in English; ask before assuming a Spanish or German departure exists.
Booking direct, on a platform, or going by train
Booking direct on graylinerome.com saves nothing on the tours we checked and gives you the same free cancellation, so use it when you want the walk-in store as a fallback. Book on GetYourGuide when you want reviews and one wallet for everything. Go by train on your own for Florence (Frecciarossa in about 1 h 30, dynamic fares) and for Naples; go with Carrani when the day needs a ferry or a coach at the far end, which is Capri, Amalfi and Venice-in-a-day.
Verdict
Carrani is the safest name in Rome coach touring: a century-old licensed company, a published address and management, and a retail brand with tens of thousands of platform reviews. Its weakness is not quality but positioning: prices are mid to high, the Pompeii product is a shuttle rather than a guided day, and the trade site confuses first-time visitors. Read our I Love Rome review for the hop-on bus and Green Line for the cheaper coach alternative.
