The short answer
GetYourGuide is the platform we send most readers to, and this GetYourGuide review explains why without pretending it is perfect. For day trips from Rome it has the widest choice of any site we track: 94 out-of-town products in our catalogue against 22 on Tiqets and 13 on Headout. On the same coach it is usually the cheapest of the three, and its default 24-hour cancellation rule is the most useful safety net when a train strike or a sick child changes your plans. Prices are checked regularly.
Where it is weaker: the sheer volume means resellers sit next to the operators who own the coaches, the meeting-point text can be vague until the voucher arrives, and the ratings average out good guides with bad drivers. Read the supplier line and the recent reviews, not the star score.
What GetYourGuide actually is
The operating company is GetYourGuide Deutschland GmbH, Sonnenburger Strasse 73, Berlin, registered at the Charlottenburg local court (HRB 132059 B) and managed by Tao Tao, Johannes Reck and Nils Chrestin, according to the site's legal notice. The company's careers timeline dates the founding to a student project in Zurich in 2009, the website launch to the following year and the move to Berlin, where the headquarters still are, two years after that. The same page lists 17 local offices, including one in Rome that opened as its first "local" office in Europe, and more than 1,000 employees.
The press centre puts the catalogue at 200,000 experiences from 50,000 supply partners in more than 18,000 cities. Those are company figures, not ours.
The legal structure matters more than the numbers. GetYourGuide's terms state that it "acts as a commercial agent" for the supplier: your contract for the Pompeii coach is with the Roman operator, GetYourGuide books it and takes payment on the operator's behalf, and its commission is included in the price you see. The terms also say that when several suppliers offer matching activities, ranking uses popularity, diversity, customer ratings, performance over time and the revenue generated, including the commission a supplier chooses to pay, so the first result is not automatically the best-value one.
What it sells from Rome and how the booking works
Every destination on the departures board has at least one GetYourGuide product; most have three or four formats. In our catalogue the flagships are:
| Day trip | Product | Price | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pompeii by coach, optional Vesuvius | Pompeii day trip | €56 | ★4.6 (5,829) |
| Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Sorrento | Pompeii and Amalfi day trip | €84 | ★4.6 (10,515) |
| Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana | Tivoli day tour | €65 | ★4.5 (2,384) |
| Florence and Pisa by coach | Florence and Pisa day trip | €103.35 | ★4.6 (2,423) |
| Tuscany and Montepulciano with lunch | Tuscany day trip | €99 | ★4.7 (3,410) |
| Ostia Antica by train, guided | Ostia half-day trip | €49 | ★4.8 (569) |
| Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio | Orvieto and Civita day trip | €94 | ★4.7 (1,459) |
Booking is standard: pick a date and a time slot, pay, and the voucher lands in the app and by email. Some listings offer "Reserve now, pay later", which holds the place on a credit card and takes the payment 72 hours before the start. The exact meeting point is on your voucher; the City Wonders coach days, for example, leave from Piazza del Popolo. Print nothing unless the listing says so. Changes and cancellations go through the platform's contact form, and the terms are explicit that the time GetYourGuide receives your request is what counts, not when you emailed the operator.
Cancellation, languages and support
Unless a listing states otherwise, the general terms give a full refund for cancellations made more than 24 hours before the start and no refund inside 24 hours or for a no-show. Refunds go back to the original payment method, or, if you choose, to a GetYourGuide refund gift card. The 24-hour default is the single biggest reason to book a long coach day here rather than on a site where the same product is non-refundable: Rome's rail strikes and the Naples motorway are both good reasons to keep an exit door.
The site and app run in the languages this guide is written in and several more; the guide language on the coach is stated per product and is English on the Rome flagships. Support is by contact form and chat inside the app; on Trustpilot the company had replied to 97% of negative reviews at the time of checking.

What reviewers praise and complain about
Trustpilot showed 3.9 from 56,065 reviews at the time of checking. The praise is consistent: knowledgeable, friendly local guides and a booking flow that is easy to use. The complaints cluster around two things that matter for day trips: service that varies from supplier to supplier, and logistics, meaning meeting points, late coaches and refund disputes when an operator changes the programme. The score is lower than Viator (4.5) or Headout (4.4) on the same site, which partly reflects a much larger and more international review base and partly reflects those logistics problems. Our reading is that the platform is reliable; individual suppliers are not always.
How it compares with the alternatives
On the identical Pompeii coach the price gap is large enough to decide the question:
Same trip, platforms compared
Prices refreshed from the GetYourGuide, Tiqets and Headout feeds.
| Platform | Price | Rating | Duration | Cancellation | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GetYourGuideFrom Rome: Pompeii Day Trip with Optional Vesuvius and Lunch | €56 Lowest price | ★ 4.6 (5,931) | 12 h | Free cancellation | Book on GetYourGuide |
| HeadoutFrom Rome: Pompeii Guided Tour and Mount Vesuvius Day Trip | €105 | ★ 4.4 (1,283) | 11 h | Free cancellation | Book on Headout |
| TiqetsPompeii & Mount Vesuvius: Day Trip from Rome + Lunch | €136 | ★ 4.6 (96) | 12:00 | — | Book on Tiqets |
Tiqets wins on city venue tickets, on the Civitavecchia train ticket that GetYourGuide lacks, and on the Castel Gandolfo palace entry (€16 against €20 here). Headout is worth a look for the Tivoli transfer-plus-tickets formats and for a second price on Pompeii and Tuscany. Booking direct with an operator such as Carrani Tours or Green Line Tours rarely saves money and removes the platform's refund process. The train remains the cheapest option for Naples, Florence and Orvieto; the trains from Rome page has the fare bands.
Verdict
Use GetYourGuide for the Pompeii day trip, the Tivoli day trip, the Florence and Tuscany coach days and anything where you want a 24-hour cancellation window on a long day. Before you pay, check three lines on the listing: the activity provider, the cancellation policy (some resellers shorten it) and the most recent ten reviews rather than the average. Then compare the same product on the compare day trips page, because on a handful of items another platform is cheaper.
