Sperlonga from Rome: the beach day by train, plus Gaeta and Ostia

The best beach within reach of Rome costs €7.00 by regional train to Fondi-Sperlonga plus a €1.50 local bus. Here is the timetable logic, the boat tours from €38, the Tiberius grotto, and what to do when you only have an afternoon.

Sperlonga from Rome is the beach day that works without a car: a fixed €7.00 regional train to Fondi-Sperlonga in 1 h 07–1 h 17, a €1.50 local bus to the foot of the white old town, and a €17 return all in. Add a €38 boat cruise to the grottoes and the €7.00 museum and you have spent about €62 on a full day at the best beach in Lazio. This page is the timetable logic for that day, the alternatives along the same coast (Gaeta, the Riviera di Ulisse boat tours, a private driver), and the honest fallback when you only have an afternoon: Ostia Lido, about half an hour from Piramide.

Partner prices are checked regularly and are per person unless marked per vehicle.

Lazio regional fares are fixed by distance band (Tariffa 39/8): €7.00 covers 101–125 km, which is why Fondi-Sperlonga costs the same on the day as a month ahead. The station bus is run by Autoservizi Piazzoli, not Cotral: €1.50 a ride, sold on board with no surcharge, exact cash requested.

Getting there: train + bus, the only sensible way

The train. Regional trains on the Roma–Formia–Napoli line leave Roma Termini every 30–60 minutes (07:36, 08:06, 08:36, 09:36, 10:36 on the weekday we searched) and stop at Fondi-Sperlonga after 1 h 07–1 h 17; the useful evening returns leave Fondi-Sperlonga at 17:50, 18:02 and 18:56, then 19:49 with a change; the fare is €7.00 one way, fixed by Trenitalia's Lazio distance tariff (band 101–125 km), so there is no reason to book weeks ahead. Buy at the machines, on the Trenitalia app or with a contactless card at the TAP&TAP validators; a paper ticket must be stamped before boarding, and Termini is one of the stations where you cannot buy on board, so an unvalidated or missing ticket costs the €100 surcharge. Some trains also call at Roma Tuscolana or Latina; the Intercity trains on the same line are faster but not covered by the regional fare.

The bus. Fondi-Sperlonga station is in Fondi, inland, not in Sperlonga. The station shuttle is not Cotral: the Comune di Sperlonga points visitors to Autoservizi Piazzoli, a Fondi bus company whose Sperlonga–Stazione FS–Fondi line takes about 25 minutes and runs roughly hourly on weekdays with a thinner Sunday grid, per its published timetable. The ticket is €1.50 a ride, sold on board with no surcharge; the company asks for exact cash. Check the Piazzoli timetable before you leave Rome: do not assume a bus meets every train, especially in the early afternoon and on Sundays. Cotral's blue buses do serve Sperlonga, but along the Via Flacca and to Terracina station, not to Fondi station. A taxi from the station is the plan B; agree the fare first.

By car or driver. The Pontina and the Via Flacca coast road take 1 h 30–2 h from central Rome without traffic; on a July Sunday the return can double. Parking in Sperlonga in summer is paid and scarce. A private day with a driver, boat tour included, is listed at €249 per vehicle for Sperlonga and €229 for Gaeta on GetYourGuide (per vehicle, 8 hours); Rome NCC firms quote similar full-day rates, see private day trips and our Cab Shuttle Taxi review.

The full day, hour by hour

The day, hour by hour

  1. Regionale from Roma Termini towards Napoli via Formia, in Fondi-Sperlonga at 09:23 (the 07:36 arrives 08:53; €7.00 either way). Validate a paper ticket, or use the app or TAP&TAP.

  2. Fondi-Sperlonga station. The Piazzoli bus to Sperlonga leaves from outside the station roughly hourly; pay the €1.50 on board with exact cash. About 25 minutes.

  3. Sperlonga, the square below the old town. Turn right for the town beach (Spiaggia di Ponente), left along the sand for Levante and the villa.

  4. Beach until lunch. Free strips sit between the beach clubs on both sides; loungers are paid. The water is clear enough for a mask.

  5. Lunch in the old town: climb the stairs from the beach, eat in a lane above Piazza Europa, come down for a granita.

  6. Boat cruise from the little harbour: 90 minutes along the cliffs to the Blue Grotto and the Tiberius grotto from the sea, with a swim stop. Check-in details are on your voucher.

  7. Walk 25 minutes along Levante beach, or take the Via Flacca bus, to the museum and Villa di Tiberio (€7.00) for the Odyssey sculptures and the emperor's dining grotto; the outdoor area closes at 19:00 in summer, earlier in other months, and the whole site is shut on Mondays and Tuesdays.

  8. Bus back to Fondi-Sperlonga station for the 18:56 regional (Termini 20:24); the 17:50 and 18:02 are the earlier options. Check the Piazzoli timetable before you leave the beach; the evening buses are sparse.

  9. Roma Termini. Sand in your shoes, €55 spent.

The order matters. Beach first, while the sand is still cool and the buses are on time; boat in the early afternoon when the light is best inside the caves; museum and villa last because they are at the far end of the beach and close in the evening. If the boat tour is your priority, book it before the train and let its check-in time set the day, because the operator leaves on its own schedule and the swim stop is the part everyone remembers.

Budget for the day, per person: €7.00 train each way, €1.50 bus each way, €38 for the cruise, €7.00 for the museum and villa, €10–15 for a lounger if you want one, €15–25 for lunch in the old town. Even with everything, it stays under €100 and most of it is fixed-price, which is not something you can say about a coach day to the Amalfi Coast.

The half-day fallback: Ostia Lido

Do-it-yourself variant

  1. Half-day version. Metro B to Piramide, cross to Porta San Paolo and take the Metromare (Roma–Lido) to Lido Centro or Cristoforo Colombo: about half an hour on a €1.50 BIT ticket.

  2. Ostia Lido. Beach clubs line the front; the free beaches start further south towards Castelporziano (bus 07 from Cristoforo Colombo).

  3. Lunch on the seafront, then either back to Rome by 15:00 or one stop inland to Ostia Antica for the ruins (closed Mondays).

Ostia Lido is Rome's own beach: about half an hour from Porta San Paolo on the Metromare (the former Roma–Lido line, run by Cotral, whose page lists the stations and the BIT fare but no journey time) on a €1.50 BIT ticket, and ten stations of beach clubs, a pier and seafront pizzerias. It is not Sperlonga. The water is greyer, the sand is darker and the front is a working town; the free beaches south of the Cristoforo Colombo stop are better than the paid ones by the pier. Its virtue is the clock: a morning at the sea and an afternoon at Ostia Antica, one stop inland, is a genuine day that starts and ends in Rome.

Beaches near Rome, ranked by time from Termini

Beach How Time one way Fare Verdict
Ostia Lido Metromare from Porta San Paolo about 30 min €1.50 BIT Half-day beach; pair with Ostia Antica
Santa Marinella Regionale, Civitavecchia line ≈ 1 h regional km-band fare Small bay by the station; the closest "pretty" option
Anzio and Nettuno Regionale from Termini ≈ 1 h regional km-band fare Town beaches, ferries to Ponza from Anzio
Sperlonga Regionale to Fondi-Sperlonga + Piazzoli bus ≈ 1 h 45 €7.00 + €1.50 The full day; best sand and water on the list; museum shut Mon–Tue
Gaeta (Serapo) Regionale to Formia-Gaeta + local bus ≈ 2 h €8.40 + bus Bigger town, fortress, split mountain

Times are station to sand on a normal weekday; the regional fares are fixed by distance band, so what you see on the machine is what you pay on the day. Santa Marinella and Anzio are the answers when Sperlonga's 1 h 45 feels too far but Ostia feels too urban: both have a beach within five minutes of the station and both sit on lines with trains through the evening. Only Sperlonga has the combination of an old town worth the climb, a museum and grottoes, and boat tours you would book on purpose, which is why it gets the board line.

Rules of the regional train, in one paragraph

Regional tickets are valid for a fixed time from validation, so stamp a paper ticket at the green machine on the platform or activate the app ticket before boarding; the Trenitalia app and TAP&TAP contactless cards do this for you. Keep the ticket until you leave the arrival station. On strike days Trenitalia guarantees regional trains between 06:00 and 09:00 and 18:00 and 21:00 Monday to Saturday, which happens to fit a beach day; Cotral guarantees buses until 08:30 and from 17:00 to 20:00, though that covers its own Via Flacca and Terracina runs, not the Piazzoli station shuttle. The rules are on the operators' sites and in our trains review.

What you actually see

Sperlonga is a white cube of a town on a headland, with a beach either side: Ponente to the north, long and family-friendly with the harbour at its foot, and Levante to the south, which runs 2 km down to the museum and the grotto. The old town is stairs and whitewashed lanes, a lookout on the sea and a dozen restaurants; an hour is enough, but the lunch is the reason to climb. The Tiberius grotto at the far end of Levante is a natural cave that the emperor turned into a dining room for his seaside villa; the marble Odyssey groups that stood in it (Ulysses blinding Polyphemus, the Scylla attack, the theft of the Palladium) were reassembled from thousands of fragments and are in the museum beside the villa. Give the site 1 h 30 including the walk through the villa ruins to the grotto mouth; the ticket is €7.00 according to the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Lazio, the museum opens 08:30–19:30 and the outdoor area keeps shorter seasonal hours. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so a Monday beach day is beach only.

Gaeta, 15 km south, is a bigger town with a fortress, a working port, the Montagna Spaccata (a split cliff with a sanctuary wedged into it) and seven beaches, the best being Serapo on the far side of the headland. It is reached from Formia-Gaeta station on the same railway, then a local bus; by public transport it is a separate day from Sperlonga, but the 4-hour boat tour joins the two by sea.

The €38 cruise is 90 minutes from Sperlonga's harbour: cliffs, the Blue Grotto and the Tiberius grotto from the water, one swim stop; it is the tour to add to a train day. The €60 four-hour version runs between Gaeta and Sperlonga with snorkelling and a longer stop, and needs the whole afternoon. Neither includes transport from Rome; both depend on the sea state and refund if the operator cancels, per the platform's default terms.

Other formats: Gaeta snorkelling, the Riviera di Ulisse, private

The Gaeta guided boat (€36, 2 hours) is the Gaeta-side equivalent of the Sperlonga cruise; the Riviera di Ulisse tour (€84, 4 h 30) is the long coastal run for people who want the whole stretch of cliffs in one go. The two private days from Rome are priced per vehicle (€229 Gaeta, €249 Sperlonga, 8 hours, boat included) and split four ways come to about €60 a head with hotel pickup, which is the only way to do this coast with small children or an early evening flight.

Ponza, and why it is not on this page

The ferries and hydrofoils to Ponza leave from Terracina, Formia and Anzio, and the island deserves a night. As a day trip from Rome it means a 06:00 start, two changes and a sailing that the sea can cancel, so it belongs in an overnight plan rather than on the departures board.

Operators who run it

The train is Trenitalia's regional service; our trains review covers tickets, validation and strike rules for the regional network. The station bus is Autoservizi Piazzoli, a family company in Fondi that has run local buses since 1950 by its own account and publishes its timetable and €1.50 fare online. Cotral, the regional bus company, reaches Sperlonga along the Via Flacca and from Terracina station; our Cotral review explains its distance-band tickets, the €7 on-board fare and the app if you use those routes. For a driver from Rome, Cab Shuttle Taxi publishes per-vehicle rates for coastal towns and full days, which is rarer than it should be among Rome NCC firms.

Verdict

Sperlonga from Rome is the cheapest good day on this site: €17 return on fixed fares, no booking needed for the train, and a town and beach that would be famous if they were in Campania. Book the boat if the season allows, learn the Piazzoli timetable for the way back, and keep Ostia Lido for the day you only have three hours. For the other short trips that pair with it, see Castelli Romani and the lakes, or the whole list on compare day trips.

Questions people ask

How do you get from Rome to Sperlonga without a car?

Regional train from Roma Termini to Fondi-Sperlonga, 1 h 07–1 h 17 for a fixed €7.00 according to trenitalia.com, then the Autoservizi Piazzoli bus from the station to Sperlonga, about 25 minutes for €1.50 paid on board. Allow 1 h 45–2 h door to beach.

What is the best beach near Rome?

For a full day, Sperlonga: white town, long sandy beaches on both sides, clear water and the Tiberius grotto. For half a day, Ostia Lido, about half an hour from Piramide on the Metromare for €1.50. Gaeta and Santa Marinella sit between the two in time and quality.

How far is Sperlonga from Rome?

About 120 km by road, 1 h 30–2 h by car on the Pontina and Via Flacca, or about 1 h 45 by train and bus. The railway station is called Fondi-Sperlonga and lies inland in Fondi; the Piazzoli bus covers the last stretch in about 25 minutes.

Is there a day tour from Rome to Sperlonga?

Not as a coach product at the time of checking. The listings are local boat tours from Sperlonga and Gaeta (from €36–60 per person) and private driver days from Rome at €229–249 per vehicle. Combine the train with a boat tour for the cheapest full day.

What is the Tiberius grotto?

A natural sea cave at the south end of Sperlonga beach that the emperor Tiberius turned into a dining room for his villa, decorated with marble groups of Ulysses blinding Polyphemus and the Scylla attack. The reassembled sculptures are in the museum next to the villa; the site costs €7.00 and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, according to the regional museums directorate.

Can I do Sperlonga and Gaeta in one day?

By public transport it is tight: they are on different bus routes from different stations. The 4-hour boat tour links the two by sea from Gaeta or Sperlonga, and the private driver days visit both. Pick one town if you are on the train.

When is the sea warm enough?

June to September for swimming without complaint; May and early October for the brave. The boat tours run in the summer season and depend on the sea state; outside it, Sperlonga is still a good lunch-and-museum day.
